The .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) was introduced in 2002 by Hornady, based on the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire case necked down to .17 caliber. Designed to provide higher velocity, flatter trajectories, and greater accuracy than .22 WMR, it quickly gained popularity among varmint hunters and target shooters. Capable of pushing 17-grain bullets over 2,600 fps, the .17 HMR is one of the most successful rimfire cartridges of the modern era.
