The 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum, introduced in 1969, was Remington’s attempt to create the fastest and most powerful rimfire cartridge of its time. Based on a bottlenecked case, it fired a 38-grain bullet at over 2,100 fps, offering impressive varmint performance. Despite its innovation, limited rifle options in the Remington 591/591 and Contender Pistol barrel, led to poor sales, and production ceased in 1982. However, its reputation for accuracy and speed later inspired small revival runs by Aguila Ammunition, keeping the cartridge alive for varmint hunting enthusiasts.
